![]() The story was like being on an express train. Bear and Thia are brilliant.Īfter everything that happened to Bear in Tyrant, I couldn't wait to dive right in and see how his story developed. I'm looking forward to reading the final part, and the author definitely knows how to draw the reader into her world. It's an entertaining novel, and one that kept me wanting to go back to it, but the few plot issues combined with the numerous grammatical and punctuation errors, pulled me out of the story enough times that it didn't leave as good an impression as the first two installments (which also had many grammatical errors). After the scene with her mother, it also made no sense that she'd run to a stranger instead of immediately calling her best friend, the cop. The fact that it didn't bother her at all bothered me. She'd been kept so sheltered during her childhood years that it should have left her completely unravelled. No panic, no tears, no freaking out when he got rid of the bodies. With Thia being such a good girl who basically did nothing risky or wrong during her younger years, I couldn't get my head around her blase attitude when it came to Bear killing a total of four bikers (over two scenes) right in front of her. ![]() ![]() ![]() I enjoyed the story enough that I want to read on and find out what happens to Bear and Thia, but I didn't like it as much as the first two books. After reading King and Tyrant, I expected great things from Lawless. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just as Nell starts to wonder if she'll ever be able to break free of her fear, she realizes that the island suffers under a terrible curse-one that can only be broken by the descendants of the Three Sisters, the witches who settled the island back in 1692. City Council president Charles Pugh insisted on Facebook that the count was "way low." He even explained away the numbers by suggesting a large number of Detroit residents were doing prison time in other cities. ![]() Local politicians responded quickly, and many all but demanded a recount. Did you know the city possesses enough vacant land to hold the entire city of San Francisco? That the Pontiac Silverdome sold for the price of a modest one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan? That there are 50,000 stray dogs roaming the streets? The census numbers raced around the Internet, made the front page of the New York Times and lots of other papers. News writers rebooted their Detroit-as-failed-state storylines. Census found the city's population had plummeted a staggering 25% in ten years - down to a pre-Model T low of 713,000. As with much of the bad news coming out of Detroit, last week's abysmal census inspired a peculiar mix of solemn pity and barely concealed delight in the media. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Please note that The Economist's review refers to the original Japanese edition, not the translation under review here.Īll find points to praise, but there is no consensus on the book as a whole. May they suffer at the hands of the literary gods for their crimes against helpless readers and Murakami.īut it's just another reminder, that when you read a book in translation you're getting screwed - often far worse than you could even contemplate. Rubin, in fact, handed in both an abridged and a complete translation, but Knopf stuck to their ridiculous word-limit. This sad fact is now confirmed in Jay Rubin's Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words, where he writes that it was "stipulated in Murakami's contract that the book should not exceed a certain length".

C S Lewis said: "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally-and often far more-worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond."Įxcellence, it turns out, is the most inclusive thing. The funny thing is-if you write with the excellence that children deserve you reach everyone. Writing for children demands nothing short of excellence. I wrote that: sin is not just about breaking the rules, it's breaking God's heart it's like poison that makes your heart sick and stops it from working properly it's like running away from God and hiding in the shadows. A little child has no concept of what sin is, for instance. When I was writing THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE, I couldn't rely on jargon. Your job is to distill-to take the profound and make it simple enough for a child to understand. I've learned that from writing for children. ![]() It's not always all about what we teach children.
